Låboratory test results (Roesler 1979; Stokoe et al. 1985; Belloti et al. 1996) show that the velocity of a propagating shear wave depends equally on principal stresses in the direction of wave propagation and particle motion. where ρ is the total density and Vs is the shear wave velocity of the soil mass.
Making improvements on the traditional macrozonation maps and generating detailed The shear wave velocity is linked analytically to the shear modulus and the density of the soil. Furthermore, it has been shown it is a function of the void ratio and the current state of stress. It has been measured at the three sites by using Down hole method. 2016-03-11 · For all these methods, shear wave velocity (V s) is the most important parameter, which represents the stiffness of the soil layers. The shear wave velocity profile at a site is usually obtained by carrying out wave propagation tests. But it is often not economically feasible to conduct these tests at all the sites. is the shear modulus (in Pa), V s is the shear wave velocity (in m/s), and ρ is the density (in kg/m3).

From Eq. (1), shear wave velocity governs shear modulus. Sheeran, et al., (1967) studied the shear wave velocity of com-compacted clayey soils to compaction water content. At constant water content, the shear wave velocity increased with dry density

The property of soil by virtue of which the soil mass allows water (or any fluid) to flow through it is known as permeability. It is very important to calculate its value to This system is designed to physically remove volatile hydrocarbons, such as petrol and solvents, by inducing a localised vacuum. Vertical wells or horizontal 1 Jan 2009 The shear wave velocity (Vs) is a very useful parameter since it links directly to the small strain shear stiffness of the soil (G0). The shear wave velocities for very soft soil was below 180 m/s and soft soil was between 180 m/s and 270 m/s at the university campus site as shown in Figure 3. Meanwhile, at Sejagung Sri Medan indicated the shear wave velocities for loose soil was between 220 m/s and 450 m/s, very dense studies have shown that confining stress, soil type/plasticity, and void ratio/relative den-sity are the most important factors influencing the variation of shear modulus, or shear wave velocity, with shear strain amplitude (e.g., Hardin and Drnevich 1972, Kramer 1996, Ishihara 1996). We measured shear wave velocities in the shallow subsurface by applying seismic interferometry to earthquake records from eight vertical borehole arrays in eastern Hokkaido, Japan. We detected an increase of several percent in the seismic velocity during January to March due to seasonal frost dynamics. Both shear and Young moduli were compared with the shear wave velocity of soil, with R 2 and RMSE of 0.96–0.97 and 0.48–3.5 MPa respectively. The major advantage of this technique is that input and output signal data can be stored in a computer that can be used to calculate soil density and stiffness moduli automatically. The shear wave velocity profile is of primary interest for geological characterization of soil sites and elucidation of near-surface structures.
